Achievements

This page details information about the many achievements that NCPC BEAT 27X has accomplished within the beat. Additionally it's a place to give special thanks to the organizations, business and individuals that have helped make it all happen. None of these achievements happened "automatically." Nor did they happen by the work of an elite or closed group. Everything has been accomplished by neighbors with ideas and a willingness to pitch in and help.

High Street Coalition

Melrose High Hopes is part of the High Street Coalition, an organization made up of NCPCs in neighborhoods that border High Street. MHH helped organize the May 2010 picnic that informally started the Coalition. The MHH Chair along with Chairs of Maxwell Park and Allendale Park NCPCs then formally called a meeting of the new Coalition in September 2010. Since then two general meetings have been held. The Coalition also organized a Take Back High Street/Honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. walk in January 2011. More than 200 participants participated in the walk. Annual Block Party

Melrose High Hopes Block Party 2004July 25, 2010 marked the 8th annual block party. Music, food, book exchange, green booths, and more are hallmarks this annual event. We're already planning next year's. If you'd like to be in on the planning, let us know. Your help will certainly be welcome, needed, and appreciated.

Thanksgiving food distribution

Collection and Distribution of food for six to ten needy families in the Horace Mann school population. Discovery Center kids paint and decorate boxes that we fill with food. Help us with this signature task. It's rewarding and you get to work with a great group of neighbors.

Thanksgiving potlucks

An annual community-building potluck supper at the November meeting. Usually attracts about 75 diners. Love to eat, like meeting people, able to organize a potluck? Get involved now to help plan and carry out this signature event. One super perk is that you might even be able to ask folks to bring your favorite dish.

Multi-NCPC Picnic

Helped organize, plan, and carry out the first Multi-NCPC Picnic at Brookdale Park in May 2010. This joint activity with Allendale Park, Jefferson, and Maxwell Park was a kick-off event for what is turning into a Take Back High St multi-NCPC collaborative.

Courtland Creek

Cleaning Up Courtland CreekCourtland Creek is a small creekside park at Courtland between Brookdale and 46th Ave. Neighbors worked to unculvert the creek and restore the environment. This was a major undertaking done mostly by neighbors with expert help and advice. It is now one of Oakland’s hidden gems although still faces the usual urban problems. We maintain the creek with semi-annual clean-ups and other activity.

Here are some views shortly after the park was created from a slideshow in the landscape architect’s online brochure http://www.wjhooddesign.com/project-courtland-f.swf
