* The Melrose-High Hopes NCPC is happy to announce that we have obtained a $10,000 Love Your Veggies Grant from Hidden Valley® Salad Dressings for our neighborhood school, Horace Mann Elementary. The grant, along with a $4000 matching grant from our city council person, Jean Quan, will be used for equipment and staffing so that students can participate in the Oakland Unified School District Salad Bar Program. Starting in the fall, students will enjoy a daily lunch-time salad bar at no additional cost.
This grant brings the total raised by the NCPC for the school to over $40,000. Other grants plus donated materials and volunteer “sweat equity” over the past two years have supported the school health program, beautification efforts, and the school garden. Another $10,000 grant application to fund a Garden Enrichment Teacher is pending.
Grantors have included: City Councilperson, Jean Quan, District 4 Supervisor, Nate Miley, The East Bay Community Foundation, The National Garden Association, Oakland Parent’s Literacy Project, Hillside Gardeners of Montclair, California Department of Education, California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers, and East Bay Nursery.
NCPC members have also sponsored 30 Boys and Girls Club Memberships for Horace Mann students.

We will be accepting completed applications at the door and conduct on-site oral interviews for the positions listed above.
