Volunteer Needs

NCPC Beat 27x Block Party

Every year we hold a Block Party to have fun and promote safety and community issues that effect us all. It is a great event for getting to know your neighbors and having a great time. This is a great opportunity to get involved as an active participant. Everyone is welcome to pitch in and volunteer. We need people with muscles to help set-up and take-down tables and canopies and chairs and to lift boxes. We need cooks and food servers who can stand for awhile and who can dish food. Can't manage any of that or prefer to sit, we need folks to sit at welcoming tables and to sit and help at the kids' art projects. Want to help? We'll have a job for you. For this event we generally need the following specific volunteers:

  • Kids games & activities supervision
  • Artists
  • Food service
  • Set up help
  • Clean up help
  • Musicians
  • Greeters

Letter writing

From time to time, certain issues require a coordinated letter-writing or petition-signing campaign. This might be, for example, to support a City Attorney law suit or to alert officials of a critical need in our community.

For example, in June 2009, we asked for letters in support of the Melrose Library and volunteers to join the “Friends of the Library” committee.

Flyer distribution

Each month neighbors pass out flyers announcing the upcoming meeting. If you can distribute fliers on your block, please volunteer right away.

Telephone calls

Neighbors also make telephone calls. If you can’t distribute fliers, you might want to volunteer to call.

Data base management

Looking for someone to work with the membership committee to update and maintain the membership data base. Should be familiar with Excel type db.

Thanksgiving food collection

A group of neighbors works to coordinate, collect, shop, store, pack, and distribute the Thanksgiving food collection. Horace Mann school provides names of needy families. Melrose HH collects food and donations. Requires ability to communicate with potential donors and organizational ability to pack and distribute the food. There’s lots of support for this activity; you won’t be alone. This is our signature event.

Thanksgiving potluck

A quick and fun task. Help to organize the meal for the annual potluck. Ask for signups for participants, determine menu needs, get supplies, set up, clean up.

Neighborhood Watch

The Neighborhood Watch program (NW) organizes neighborhoods by blocks or part of blocks to help neighbors work with police to prevent and report possible criminal activity. The NW also provides a way for nearby neighbors get to know each other, look out for each other, perhaps organize for emergency preparedness as well as and providing an organized response to possible criminal activity. While some neighborhoods in Oakland have several NW groups in their NCPC areas, Melrose High Hopes has only a few. It's essential that we develop more of them which will help us to achieve our mission. Learn more about NW watch in Oakland by visiting this Oakland city Web site. Or download a flyer from the OPD on How to start a Neighborhood Watch
